2015 Reflection

When I auditioned for the creative writing program here I thought it would be completely different. I thought we could write what we wanted, read what we wanted and we would be able to discover our own writing. When everyone was talking about what the creative writing major really was, I was a bit hesitant. Do I really want people telling me what I can and can’t write and the genres I want to write? Not really. I wanted to come into the major to prepare myself for becoming a journalist when I’m older, not to become the new bestselling author of a fiction piece. But as the year has gone on I have started to get used to the different writing styles and the things we had to write.

Firstly, poetry is not my thing. The unit we did on poetry was the most boring thing in my life. I had no interest in any of the assignments we did. Although there was one, the postcard poetry, I really enjoyed writing, but still it wasn’t my best. I think writing descriptively is interesting and that’s exactly what we were doing with that assignment.  We had to describe an entire picture with poetry and most of the assignments were picked for my portfolio because I felt that they were my best, and had the best description. Before this year I had no idea how to format a poetry a piece, but by the end of the unit I had no problem with setting up poetry pieces with stanzas.

Fiction is interesting, I LOVE reading it but it’s hard to write it, a whole story when you get five minutes to come up with an idea and go with it until you find an ending. I wrote a lot of stories on an online website and I actually did a decent job but, in class I write like I have no idea how to write and more often than not I can’t finish. I think I’m a good writer but in these classes I don’t really get to show it off.  I think it’s because we write short stories I don’t really know how to end them. I like to go into detail with my stories and have the whole story be complete but I can’t completely do that in 3 days or 6.

Non- Fiction is my strong area, I have always loved writing non-fiction and hope to do it as a profession with working on it more. I loved writing all of my speeches and all of the different non- fiction pieces we did. I wish we did more non- fiction this year but it makes me a lot more excited for next year with the journalism course.  Since we didn’t work on a lot of non-fiction I didn’t have a lot to choose from, but I really liked the topics we worked on for the speeches. When I get older I would like to go into political science journalism so I love doing research projects with today’s current events, they have always interested me.

I don’t really like the special projects that we worked on to be honest I found them kind of boring. The one I had a lot of fun with was the personification of feelings, if it was considered a special project. I loved doing all the movies with the trailers and making the one with the poem. I always have loved doing movies and music videos and doing it in classes and the certain assignments we did. The vignettes were interesting and I had a fun time writing about certain times in my life. I believe that the comic project was pointless, I get if it was to teach us the software but I didn’t like it that much.

This year was a big year for me school wise, I thought it was going to be easy and it wasn’t and I struggled a lot in school including with these classes. I stressed out a lot about writing and deadlines, not having enough or not being able to finish where I am. I think next year will definitely be a better year now that I know what to expect and I enjoy the course we are doing. I think this year I struggled a lot because I didn’t really have any motivation to right say, a fairy tale adaption because that’s not what I like to write. That was a huge struggle for me was just not wanting to write, but for next year I need to teach myself just how to get over it and write, not procrastinate.

I think I also grew a lot as a writer, my grammar improved dramatically over the course of the year. I used to be the worst speller in the world. I also improved a lot with my writing styles. This year I learned how to set up a story and use dialogue. I learned how to write descriptively better too.

I have a huge passion for reading and I love reading, but it gets to a certain extent where I am reading way too much, so this year I had to put away my recreational reading a little and read my creative writing and English books. I definitely enjoyed reading quite a few books. I think reading in all these classes definitely opened up the types of genres that I would want to read. I usually read young adult romance, because I love them so much, but now I would consider reading a book like the thief of Always, before I would never consider reading a book like that but I really enjoyed reading that book. I wish we could have more of a choice on what we read, like I did not enjoy the snow child at all. I loved being able to go into our own groups like I was in the romance/realistic fiction group and I those are the kind of books I like, But I didn’t like the book my group had to read. They were so short and didn’t really have anything to them.

I think this year wasn’t my best year and I could have put in a lot more effort. I don’t think I really enjoyed the assignments and units we did besides a few. Even though I didn’t like them they taught me a lot more than I knew before I came into the creative writing department. I loved all the masterclass we did, especially with Boris Fishman he seemed like he knew what he was talking about and that he was seriously genuinely into writing. He didn’t sugarcoat and he told us how hard it really is to be a writer. I think that after experiencing my first year being a creative writing major I will be able to really put forth a lot of effort next year.

I definitely wouldn’t say that this was my year but as a writer I think that I improved immensely. I’m hoping that next school year will be a better year for me now that I know what to expect and the kind of books we read and how much we actually do really read.  I think overall I really enjoyed this year and I enjoy the creative writing program.

My Life (Besides Coffee)

Quote

We All Want The Same Thing

Rixton Concert

Besides Ed Sheeran I also saw the British boy band Rixton. Since I really love One Direction it wasn't hard to fall in love with Rixton. The night before I saw them they dropped their debut album named Let the Road. I had heard some of their songs before but I never thought I would want to see them live, but once I did they were amazing. They have such a good energy that you can't help but dance. Most of the audience members weren't sure who they were but as soon as they started the audience was having a really good time and enjoying them. Their songs were catchy and had good lyrics and would sometimes mix in other songs. Once they come out with their own tour I would definitely want to see them, they were so fun and charismatic. They were all really talented with the instruments that they play and seemed to have a lot of fun themselves.

Ed Sheeran Concert

Recently, as in last night I went to a Ed Sheeran concert. The red head sang his heart out in an amazing performance. I attended the sold out show at the CMAC in Canandaigua and it was packed. Every single seat in the seating area was sold out including the lawn seats, Upstate New York was obviously very excited to the award winning artist. I've been to a couple concerts and no one had this much raw talent. He made amazing sounds just from hitting his guitar a certain away and he didn't mess up once. During the show he announced that he had been working on a song for about 3 years writing about a sentence a month. Little did the audience know he was actually going to rap. A lot of the audience members were shocked that the singer that normally sang slow love songs could actually have it out in a rap battle. Not only he is an amazing singer but he's super nice. Halfway through a performance a girl, about 16 ran up on stage with a security guard chasing her. Ed stopped the security guard asking if the girl just wanted a selfie, and took a picture. He was very friendly towards the girl asking her name and if she was having fun. The audience was very into the show, singing along, clapping and dancing. I definitely would see him again because he was such a fun performer.

Youtubers I watch

From my last post I was talking about how much I really enjoy YouTube. I thought if you watch YouTube and are looking for new youtubers to watch or if you just thought "Hey let me watch some youtubers."

My first two youtubers are Caspar Lee and Joe Sugg- They are roommates that live in London. Both of their channels are funny, they both go for the challenges and collaborations with other youtubers. They're probably my favorite.
 Caspar's Channel
 Joe's Channel

Zoe Sugg- Zoe's Channel

Alfie Deyes-   Alfie's Channel

Marcus Butler-  Marcus's Channel

Oli White- Oli's Channel

Connor Franta- Connor's Channel

That's all I can think of right now and I can guarantee that I'm forgetting some but you should definitely check these people out! :)

Youtube Going Viral

There is something about teenagers sitting in front of camera's talking and messing around that catches millions of peoples eye. For me, I was just sitting around on watching music videos and I was looking at their make up and I was thinking, wow I wish I could do my make up like that. I was twelve then and thought I could probably pull it off when in fact it would probably look like I got punched in the eye a hundred times. I wanted to learn how to do that, so I had looked up how to do it. That leaded to me watching "Getting Ready in the Morning" Videos. (Stupid, I know) I had heard all my friends talking about it but I didn't think I would really like it. I slowed down with watching the videos. Then, about a year later I started watching them. At first I had no idea why I found them so interesting. It was just people sitting in front of a camera talking. But as you watch these peoples videos you start to get there life stories, I mainly started watching British you tubers and there are a whole group that I watch and they're all best friends. I think there is something interesting about being able to see a glimpse of other peoples lives, most youtubers vlog which consists of them bringing a camera with them and recording what they do all day. I think these are also cool because you can just watch people go throughout their lives but you get to see them in their natural habitat, doing what they normally do even if it's boring.

Girls Vs. Schools

At my school, like most schools there is a strict dress code mostly obtaining to females. This has struck a lot of peoples attention lately including mine. Most of the dress code is there so our bodies won't be distracting but why do girls have to cover themselves and be ashamed because boys can't help but look and stare. Why can't boys be the one that are taught not to look and be distracted because he can see my shoulder. Girls have to be punished because our bodies are so distracting to boys and is disrupting their learning process. So because we show our knees we're to blame for the 60% the boy that sit next us to us got? I get that there should be a certain guideline on how you should dress while you're at school but, why do we have to look like nuns? Recently one school suspended over 50 students, all of them were girls. Girls already have problems with their body and then a teacher or administrator who is supposed to be supportive tells them to cover up their body it doesn't exactly make a girl feel like she is special. I agree that there should be a guideline but I don't think they should be shaming girls bodies. I think girls should be able to show their bodies and be proud of who they are instead of having to cover it so they don't distract boys from their education. Most girls aren't even dressed proactively they're just wearing a crop top a couple inches above their waist or and off the shoulder shirt, none of this stuff is going to make the boys go crazy and flunk all of their exams. No girls body deserves to be shamed because it effects boys studies, this isn't the 1920's where woman had no rights and the men had all the control over what happens. This is 2015 where girls should be able to wear what they want without being shamed.

Top 4 Vacation Spots

In my years of living (which isn't a lot) I have gone on some amazing vacations thanks to my parents. I have had amazing experiences while on all of these vacations and I'm extremely lucky to have been able to go.
This is a really hard list to make considering I've been to amazing places.

1. Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts- Provincetown is an amazing place and was actually my first vacation. I've been there quite a few times and each time it's nearly impossible to get bored. During the day I would usually go to Herring Cove and it's an amazing beautiful beach. But there is tons of stuff to do there. At night you can go to Commercial St. and go shop and eat out. It's lively and there are so many amazing people. It's definitely my favorite place.
2. Scotland
When I say Scotland I mean Edinburgh and Glasgow because that's where I went. Since my family is from Glasgow that's where I spent most of my time. The people there are unbelievably friendly and helpful. Downtown Glasgow is so nice as well. They have amazing shops like Primark and great food like Greggs. If you're going to Scotland you should definitely make your way to Glasgow. When I went to Edinburgh I went at a perfect time. It was fringe festival and I went to the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo and that was an amazing experience that more people should try. Overall Scotland is amazing and beautiful.
3. Clearwater, FL
The one truly amazing thing about Clearwater is there beaches. If you want a really good beach then Clearwater is definitely a place you'll love. They also have amazing weather and tourist attractions.
4. Toronto, Canada
I might just say that Toronto is one of my Favorite places because I went to an amazing concert there but actually Toronto is a really fun city. There are tons of shops and restaurants. The people there are also very friendly, and just a bit aways is Ikea. :)

Where my Writing Hides Poem

My writing hides behind fear.
My writing hides in my heart not wanting to show all the emotions I have.

My writing hides in the lead of a pencil.
My writing hides from me when I watch TV.

My writing hides when I’m trying to look for it.
It hides when I’m trying write

It hides in my hands not in the mood to write.

But sometimes it won’t hide and I can find it.

Or it will just show itself.

Narrative Poem

I slowly slipped into darkness the silhouette of the doctor’s face fading away
Everything was going darker and darker
Until I felt a blinding light hit my face.
I slowly opened my eyes and saw a room covered in white
All white and every inch of the ceiling was covered in crystals.
I got off of the plush bed and walked over to the thin spiral staircase.
It was so tiny I could barely fit.
I looked up and saw a bunch of faces talking to me.
They kept calling me I couldn’t tell if I knew them or not.
I kept walking, it didn’t feel like I was walking.
It was like I was floating up the stairs.
Once it seemed like I got to the top they would expand more.
It didn’t seem like I was able to stop either.
 I kept hearing my name.
The walls seemed like they were closing in on me
I looked up and the ceiling was coming down too
I crouched down to see if I could escape but I couldn’t.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes when everything seemed to be silent.
Nothing moved and I heard a soft beep.
Beep…beep…beep
 It went pitch black again.
 Nothing Happened.
I slowly opened my eyes to see if I was in the white room
But I wasn’t.
I was greeted by the people in my dreams.
There smiling blurry faces looking down on me.

Snippit of Story

This is a little part of the story I wrote a bit ago and never finished

A woman was sitting on a chair looking out the window, to a field of sunflowers. She was remembering the moment when she was healthy and young and would run in the field with all her friends. The wind would blow through her brown hair and when she came back into the house she would have pollen all over her. All of the girls would all lay down in an empty part of the field and just lay, looking into the sun feeling the warmth spread all through their bodies. She would open her blue eyes and see the birds and clouds.  She would touch the soft cotton dress material that would make her fall asleep and she would touch the fabric through her fingers. Slowly falling asleep and not returning home until mama was about to serve dinner.

Favorite Romance Books

Since in my last post I was writing about the Romance Genre I thought I would tell you some of my Favorite romance books.  And if you don't want to buy any books then there are some really good books to a website called Wattpad and it's completely FREE! All you have to do is type in a genre or whatever you want and you can read stories that people come up with. Usually they are really good and pretty long. You can even write a story. Here are my favorite Romance books.

  • The Shadow Falls Series by C.C Hunter
  • On the Fence by Katie West
  • Deadly Little Secret Series by Laurie Stolraz
  • Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins
  • The Kissing Booth by Beth Reekles
  • So Much Closer by Suzane Colasanti
  • Something Like Fate by Suzane Colasanti
  • Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen
  • What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen
  • Girl Online by Zoe Sugg
  • Match Series by Allie Condie
  • The Wrong Side of Wright by Jenn Marie Thorne
  • The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
  • PaperTowns by John Green
  • Let it Snow Short Stories
  • The Winnie Years Series by Lauren Myracle
(I know it's alot of books but it's worth it)

Romance Genre

So in my Performance Word and Text class we are talking about Genre's and our favorite. My favorite is definitely Romance. I love everything about Romance, these books have made me fall in love with love. I read mostly YA (Young Adult) Romances right now, and they're extremely sweet. Since I don't have a love life right now, I like to read about other peoples. It's nice because most of the time they are pretty realistic, and I can connect with them on some level. I get so involved with the book I feel like I'm watching from the sidelines. I root for different characters and I'm not going to lie but I cry a lot too. I feel that the Romance Genre give a lot of girls some hope, that there is that one amazing guy out there waiting for you (and there is, so don't worry). Everyone just wants to read a book and hope for a good ending and a happily ever after.

Writing Careers

I think from my last post, I should also have a bit of a conclusion to the writing career. Besides Journalism and Communications there are hundreds of other writing occupations that you could major in.
Like:

  • Author- An author is broadly defined as "the person who originated or gave existence to anything" and whose authorship determines responsibility for what was created. Narrowly defined, an author is the originator of any written work and can also be described as a writer.
  • Blogger
  • Copy Editor-Copy editing (also copy-editing or copyediting, sometimes abbreviatedce) is the work that an editor does to improve the formatting, style, and accuracy of text.
  • Freelancer-freelancer or freelance worker is a term commonly used for a person who is self-employed and is not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term
  • Ghost Writer-Ghostwriter is a term used most often for a professional writer-for-hire -- of books, manuscripts, screenplays, scripts, articles, blog posts, stories, reports, whitepapers, or other texts. The finished product is usually, but not always, officially credited to another person, hence the term "ghost." The ghostwriter is often hidden, that is.
  • Journalist
  • Literary Editor
  • Poet
  • Screenwriter
  • Speech Writer
  • Technical Writer
  • Website Writer
There are many more Occupations you could try, If you look up Writing Occupations on Wikipedia you can find an entire list the definitions are also on that Wikipedia page.

Journalism/Communications Career

One thing that I've wanted for a while is major in Journalism/Communications while I am in college. Since I was in second grade I knew I wanted to do something with writing as a career. We took a survey on what our favorite thing to do was in school. We all stood up and went to different areas. Finally, writing was called and I was the only one sitting on the floor. Most kids chose gym or art but I chose writing. I was always passionate about writing, I've always had a good imagination and would create this own little word and story and make it my own. As I got older I started to like Social Studies because I was able to do a lot of research. Google was like my best friend, I was always on it. So one day, I asked someone what's something that you can do with research and writing? Journalism. I became obsessed with the idea of being a journalist and being able to write about different stories. I started watching the news all the time to see everything that was happening current day. Then eventually, I started writing short stories about events that had happened or I would write about the war going on or 9/11. For the next couple years I had it implanted in my brain that I wanted to be a Journalist. Then, one Christmas Eve I started talking to my cousin about her career, she was in Public Relations area (Communications). She told me all these stories about meeting celebrities and how she was standing right next to One Direction and how the nicest celebrity is Snooki when she walked with her down the red carpet. I thought I was in love with this area because I would get to meet all these famous people. When really this is something I would be perfect. She gave me an example of what she does, she said, "Say Jennifer Lopez cheated on her husband and it became public. She would contact us to help her and we would create a better story and sell it to say, Good Morning America and they would air it." I thought that sounded amazing. She said some people even broadcast it themselves. I thought that sounded amazing, I would be writing, a Journalist and I would be able to work with amazing people. I've always thought this is the perfect career for me, and I think more people should consider it.

On wikipedia the definition of Communications Studies is: Communication studies is an academic field that deals with processes of human communication. The discipline encompasses a range of topics, from face-to-face conversation to mass media outlets such as television broadcasting. Communication studies also examines how messages are interpreted through the political, cultural, economic, semiotic, hermeneutic, and social dimensions of their contexts.
On Wikipedia the definition of Journalism is: Journalism is gathering, processing, and dissemination of news and information related to the news to an audience. The word applies to both the method of inquiring for news and the literary style which is used to disseminate it.[1] [2]

My Reading Type

  Hello,
So there are three types of common readers, Realist, Fantasist, and Pragmatist. Realist tend to like more realistic stories that can happen to anyone and not out of the ordinary they would want to read about more relatable characters. Realistic stories are probably my favorite. I like when I can relate to a character easily. That's why I like romantic books because it's possible and it is possible to relate to a character.
Pragmatist is someone who would like to read cookbooks, magazines or the newspaper. I like to read magazines a lot and I'm also interested in a Journalism career so I would like to pick up some tips for the future which I sometimes find.
Fantasist is someone who likes fantasy, with unicorns, vampires and werewolves. Fiction. I would say I like to read these because I like to read things that may be out of the ordinary just to see if like zombies came attacking the world, what would happen? I like books like the Shadow Falls series with C.C Hunter because it was such a good story with all of the different species she had in there that it just made me want to read more.
I like reading in general so as long as it's a good book with good characters, I will most likely read it and like it. As someone who loves to write I want to read more than one genre so it could maybe influence my writing style and give me ideas.
So in summary I think that all in all I am all the reading types, as long as it's a good book, I will read it.
